The Cat's Power!! - December 1st, World AIDS Day.

Today's is December 1st, World AIDS Day.

The theme of this year is "Universal Access and Human Rights", here's what we got from www.avert.org about the concept of this year:

"The theme for World AIDS Day 2010 is 'Universal Access and Human Rights'. Global leaders have pledged to work towardsuniversal access to HIV and AIDS treatment, prevention and care, recognising these as fundamental human rights. Valuable progress has been made in increasing access to HIV and AIDS services, yet greater commitment is needed around the world if the goal of universal access is to be achieved. Millions of people continue to be infected with HIV every year. In low- and middle-income countries, less than half of those in need of antiretroviral therapy are receiving it, and too many do not have access to adequate care services.²

The protection of human rights is fundamental to combating the global HIV and AIDS epidemic. Violations against human rights fuel the spread of HIV, putting marginalised groups, such as injecting drug users and sex workers, at a higher risk of HIV infection. By promoting individual human rights, new infections can be prevented and people who have HIV can live free from discrimination.

World AIDS Day provides an opportunity for all of us - individuals, communities and political leaders - to take action and ensure that human rights are protected and global targets for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care are met."

AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since 1981. In 2005, 3 million people died of AIDS, among which 570,000 were children. So please keep it in mind, (1)wear condoms, and (2)do the HIV test every 3 months. Not only to save your life, but also to change the world.

Raise awareness, make a better place to live for all of us.

Here's some pictures we (and our guests) took from last weekend.

The "2010 Taiwan Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade" made the new record in history,

there were over 30,000 people (not only gay , also some straight people) walked on the street to stand up for the equality and show their support.

We're glad with what they did and hope everything will get better as soon as possible!

The Cat's Power!! - Unconstitutional: Federal Court Overturns Proposition 8, Gay Marriage Ban in California

The Cat's Pajamas believes in EQUALITY for everyone.

We saw the news about the federal court overturning Proposition 8 and we're really happy that a federal judge helped people finally take a giant step in the right direction today. Here's what just happened:

"On August 4, 2010, Federal District Court of Northern California Judge Vaughn Walker ruled that the controversial Proposition 8, passed by California voters in a referendum in November 2008, was uncosntitutional. The ruling affirmed the plaintiff's claims that Prop. 8 violated both the 14th amendment's Equal Protection Clause and the Due Process clause.

Numerous findings of fact support the ruling made by Judge Walker. Nearly every piece of evidence and testimony submitted by the defense was ruled either unreliable or inadmissable. However, Judge Walker found compelling evidence from the plaintiffs that there was unequal treatment under the law. This finding is in addition to the on face reading of the text of Prop. 8, which is openly discriminatory. These findings of fact make the decision difficult to overturn in an appeal by the defense to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The 9th Circuit, on the other hand, is the least predictable federal appeals court and is notorious for unexpected rulings.

Judge Walker's ruling is stayed until later this week, and will likely remain stayed pending appeal by the defense. Until the appeals process is determined, and a possible hearing in the US Supreme Court, no new same-sex marriages likely will occur in California. A ruling in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals could spell the end of same-sex marriages bans in the Western United States. Should the US Supreme Court hear the case and affirm Judge Walker's decision, that decision could spell the end of bans on same-sex marriage throughout the United States and its territories. ~by Gregory Stevens"
