Night Owl (7) - Micasa

【Micasa】
Address: B1, No. 277, Sec. 2, Dunhua S. Rd, Taipei (Close to MRT Liuzhangli Station)
Entrance: 400 NTD for girls, 600 NTD for guys for an open Bar

Thinking you’ve got a latino in your soul? Wondering where the latinos have gone in Taipei? Well, Micasa is the club for you.

Starting from Barrio, Hips, until the Micasa now, for years the club has been adding a pinch of latin flavor on top of the lively night life in Taipei. Every weekend, besides the general pop you can hear everywhere, Micasa also brings us other alternatives from Salsa, bachata, merengue to Caribbean Reggae and reggaeton.

Drink-wise, it offers up to 30 different kinds of drinks: Margarita, Cuba Libre, tequila shot, all you can drink( if you can take it) the whole night. Another worth mentioning is their finger-licking food coming from the chef from the reputatious latin restaurant “El Gallo”.

So next time, when you feel like some latin passion, save your ticket to Cuba. Check out Micasa, it will assure you the best latin experience in Taipei.

The Cat's Travel Guide: Shenkeng (深坑)

*Why you should go to Shenkeng?
Check out the old street and eat local food. Also, Shenkeng has been identified with "TOFU", people even call it "The Tofu Capital" of Taiwan. Beside trying the best tofu in this country, what else I should say?

*How to get there?
By Bus and Subway
You can take the subway to Gong Guan station on green line, then take the bus number 660 and get off at Shenkeng stop; also you can just take the bus 236 from either Taipei Main Station or wherever, then get off at the last stop.

P.S
Shenkeng is a cool town to visit, but probably not that kind of place you should hang out for 1 day. So we strongly suggest that beside visiting Shenkeng, you check out the area close by, such as the AMAZING Taipei Zoo. Think about it: after the stop at the zoo, you probably don't want to eat any more meat after watching those creatures happily jumping around. At this moment, nothing is better than a silky, warm plate of tofu showing up on your dinning table, isn't it?

Walk on the Wild side (3) : Meal 8

【Meal 8】

Address: 1F., No.26, Ln. 40, Taishun St., Da’an Dist., Taipei City 106, Taiwan

Surrounded by the boutiques and western cafes on the edges of the ShiDa night market, this small glass-front shop lines its shelves with enough knick-knacks and gewgaws to satisfy even the most obscurantist pop-culture aficionado. These nostalgic treasures, seemingly out of the cereal boxes of the 1980s and collector catalogs from Hollywood, include everything from Max Headroom pins to more Star Wars kitsch than you could shake a lightsaber at.

A perfect fit for ShiDa's endless love of the lowbrow, Meal 8 also can complete whatever look you might have cobbled together from the hordes of streetside vendors. What's particularly cool here are the accessories--lots and lots of earrings, sunglasses, rings, and necklaces, all in that style that just somehow unites your grandmother with fine arts majors. Check it out--you just might rediscover your childhood and unearth your inner John Waters.

The Cat's Power!! - December 1st, World AIDS Day.

Today's is December 1st, World AIDS Day.

The theme of this year is "Universal Access and Human Rights", here's what we got from www.avert.org about the concept of this year:

"The theme for World AIDS Day 2010 is 'Universal Access and Human Rights'. Global leaders have pledged to work towardsuniversal access to HIV and AIDS treatment, prevention and care, recognising these as fundamental human rights. Valuable progress has been made in increasing access to HIV and AIDS services, yet greater commitment is needed around the world if the goal of universal access is to be achieved. Millions of people continue to be infected with HIV every year. In low- and middle-income countries, less than half of those in need of antiretroviral therapy are receiving it, and too many do not have access to adequate care services.2

The protection of human rights is fundamental to combating the global HIV and AIDS epidemic. Violations against human rights fuel the spread of HIV, putting marginalised groups, such as injecting drug users and sex workers, at a higher risk of HIV infection. By promoting individual human rights, new infections can be prevented and people who have HIV can live free from discrimination.

World AIDS Day provides an opportunity for all of us - individuals, communities and political leaders - to take action and ensure that human rights are protected and global targets for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care are met."

AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since 1981. In 2005, 3 million people died of AIDS, among which 570,000 were children. So please keep it in mind, (1)wear condoms, and (2)do the HIV test every 3 months. Not only to save your life, but also to change the world.

Raise awareness, make a better place to live for all of us.

Walk on the Wild side (2) : Deeplay Boutique

【Deeplay Boutique】

Address: 1F., No.17, Ln. 13, Pucheng St., Da’an Dist., Taipei City 106, Taiwan

ShiDa Night Market has long been known for clothes, but a recent arrival has really pushed the neighborhood into some new territory. Amidst the abundance of scarves, sunglasses and skirts pouring out of the suitcases of sidewalk entrepreneurs, Deeplay has cut a hip figure for local fashion and music.

If you want street fashion with more of an edge, then don't miss the collection at Deeplay. This sleek boutique sells designer threads from Taipei and around the world. A youthful, urbanite aesthetic dominates the racks, with lots of chic, monochromatic leggings, sweaters and tees. While you stop by, you can get the lowdown on upcoming dance parties, as the owner is also a DJ.

Walk on the Wild side : Java Javoo Coffee.

【Java Javoo Coffee】
Address: Pucheng St., Lane 13, No. 4, Taipei. Taiwan
Price Range: From 45 NTD to 100 NTD

Having trouble finding good coffee in Taipei? Don't wanna pay over 3 bucks for it but other cheap coffee places just not any good? Now there's a place you must try if you ever visit Taipei and stay with us. It's only 5 mins walk from The Cat's Pajamas, in the alley with a lot of restaurants. It's called "Java Javoo".

Besides the coffee (NT$55 for an Americano), they also have hot tea and decent food. Also, if you're truly an alcoholic or just want to enjoy your life, they also have some great cocktails and the beer is cheap, starting from NT$100. The crowd is a diverse mix of foreign residents, students, and locals, cobbled together through the network of the very friendly owner and plenty of walk-up traffic. Check it out and have a nice cuppa, right in our favorite neighborhood, ShiDa.
